Mascot Public Relations Volunteers

Position Title: Mascot Public Relations Volunteers
Reports To: Coordinator, Community Relations

Number of Positions: 10 - 15 required Pre-Games: November 2019 - July 2021 and 5 required Games-time: August 6-21, 2021

The above numbers are required to ensure Mascot availability at various events. Mascot Public Relations Volunteers will share the engagement calendar based on their own availability.

Reporting to the Coordinator, Community Relations, Mascot Public Relations Volunteers are passionate, energetic individuals that will engage and energize a wide variety of audiences while promoting the Niagara 2021 Canada Summer Games. In cooperation with a team of staff and other volunteers, Mascot Public Relations Volunteers will ensure a regional presence with the primary responsibility of attending Catch the Spirit education programs across all four Niagara Region School Boards. School visits will take place between the hours of 9:00am and 3:00pm.

Mascot Public Relations Volunteers may also be requested to assist with community events, parades and other social activities.

Although Mascot Volunteers are required from November 2019 through to Games-time dates of August 6-21, 2021, there is some flexibility to accommodate shorter commitment periods of time such as three to six months, for example, fulfilling the January 2020 to June 2020 school year visits.
Mascot Public Relations Volunteers will represent the vision of the Niagara 2021 Canada Summer Games at all times: Inspire. Transform. Unify.


  • At least 16 years of age

  • Between 5’4” and 6” tall

  • Able to work in a costume for 30 minutes at a time before resting

  • Able to lift approximately 25 pounds and stand for long periods of time

  • Available to work flexible and varied hours primarily daytime school hours as of November 2019 through to Games-time

  • Able to commit to a substantial period of time during the Games-time dates of August 6-21, 2021 is an asset

  • Skills and experience in dance, drama, working with children, and previous mascot work are considered assets

  • Team player with strong interpersonal skills

  • Ability to effectively and efficiently troubleshoot situations and use sound judgement

  • Available to participate in an audition process in October 2019, date to be advised

  • Available to participate in Mascot training sessions prior to publicly launching the Mascot in November, 2019

  • Adhere to Niagara 2021 Canada Summer Games Mascot guidelines and health and safety policies and procedures


  • Outgoing personality with a willingness and desire to have fun as a public representative and ambassador of the Niagara 2021 Canada Summer Games

  • Motivated and excited about interacting with people of all ages and abilities

  • Generate trust with an audience to promote engagement and interaction

  • Ability to learn and bring the Mascot character “to life” with large movements and gestures while being friendly, upbeat, and energetic

  • Excellent non-verbal communication skills are essential

  • Additional experience with dance, gymnastics, mime, mascot and/or clowning is an asset

  • Promote the Games by being highly visible at events, motivating the crowd and interacting with the public

  • Be accountable for the costume, ensuring all pieces are present both before and after every performance, noting any deficiencies

  • Maintain personal hygiene as the costume will be worn by multiple individuals

NOTE: Successful applicants 18 years of age and older will be required to provide an original and favourable Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) date stamped no earlier than September 2019.
