Position Title: Medical Services Chair
Reports To: Games Services Committee Chair
Term: Fall 2019 to September 2021

Summary:

The Medical Services Chair is a senior volunteer with the Niagara 2021 Canada Games Host Society who actively participates on the Games Services Committee (GSC) and is responsible for the planning and delivery of the Medical Services Functional Area (FA). The Medical Services Functional Area ensures the safety and wellbeing of all participants and Games family is upheld to the highest level.

The Medical Services Chair works together with other Functional Area chairs, supporting volunteers and staff from the Host Society. The person in this role will be responsible for training, scheduling, and leading the Medical Committee(s) in the lead up to and during the Canada Games. The Medical Services Committee is made up of Medical Leads for each of Niagara 2021’s sport and non-sport venues. Medical Leads are responsible for planning medical services on their respective venues, coordinating with other FAs to ensure the appropriate level of service. The Medical Services Chair is deeply involved with recruiting, training, and guiding these key leads as they implement plans and work towards success.

The Medical Chair will also represent the Host Society at various meetings, forums and other activities in the community, as required.

Prerequisites:

  • A thorough understanding of the Medical industry

  • Knowledge and strong relationships in the medical profession in the Niagara Region

  • Prior Multi-sport Games experience is an asset

  • Bilingualism (English & French) is an asset for this position

  • Being a medical practitioner is not required for this role

Duties & Responsibilities:

Recruiting

  • Recruit, train and schedule volunteers for the Medical Committee and other positions as required.

Planning

  • Implement Host Society policies and procedures throughout the Medical Functional Area portfolio and operations.

  • Coordinate and participate directly in the planning and delivery of the Medical Operational Plan and related functions.

  • Work collaboratively with the Host Society’s senior leadership team in the development and implementation of all dimensions of the medical operational plan.

  • Liaise with other Host Society GSC chairs and support volunteers to identify and manage interdependencies between related functional areas.

  • Work collaboratively with the Chief Medical Officer, Chief Therapist and Chief Nurse in the planning and delivery of medical services.

  • Liaise, on behalf of the Host Society with respect to Medical functions with broader stakeholders as required such as:

    • Canada Games Council

    • Sport Canada

    • Provincial/territorial governments

    • Municipal government

    • Provincial/territorial Chiefs de Mission and their mission staff

    • Other related parties

Games Time

From appointment through to completion of the Games (August 2021) including extended hours during Games Time (August 1-24, 2021):

  • Plan, deliver and support pre-Games Medical meetings.

  • To be an active member on the GSC for the Host Society.

  • Undertake other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the chair of the GSC.

  • Demonstrate commitment and understanding of the Host Society vision, mission, goals and work within the approved budget.

  • Prepare a final report on the Medical component of the Games.

  • Ensure that the medical team at large has the support they need to deliver an effective medical program

Time Commitment and Availability:

  • Participate in volunteer orientation and training sessions

  • Participate in the GSC monthly meetings as required

  • Lead/conduct monthly Medical Services Committee specific meetings as required, provide ad-hoc guidance to Medical Services leads where needed

  • Liaise with other functional areas and committee chairs as required

  • Participate in other functional area related meetings as required

  • Participate in functional area presentations at Mission and NSO Conferences (four major conferences prior to the Games)

  • A willingness to work variable work hours including weekends and evenings

  • To be available for pre-games sport test events

  • Prepare post event final report as per Canada Games Council format within one month of Games completion.
