Position Title: Chair, Athletes’ Village
Reports To: Games Services Committee Chair
Term: Winter 2020 to September 2021

Summary:

The Village Chair is a senior volunteer with the Niagara 2021 Canada Games Host Society who actively participates and collaborates with other Chairs on the Games Services Committee (GSC) and is responsible for the planning and delivery of the Village Accommodations and Services Functional Area (FA). The Athletes Village FA oversees athlete accommodations and entertainment and serves as a coordinating body for other functions on-site at the Athlete’s Village at Brock University, such as Transport, Food and Beverage, Security, Medical and Mission Services. The Village FA works with other FAs to ensure a phenomenal Games are experienced by all residents of the Athlete’s Village.

The person in this role leads the Athletes Village Venue Team, made up of Leads from FAs that provide services to address coaches, managers, and team technical support staff at the Athletes Village.This team is responsible for understanding the existing operations at Brock and integrating Niagara 2021 operations in such a manner that standards are met and residents have a great experience. At Games-time, the Athletes Village Chair serves as one of a team of Village Mayors who oversee operations, coordinating communications, addressing issues and ensuring everything is running smoothly.

The Athletes Village Chair also represents the 2021 Canada Games Host Society at various meetings, forums, and other activities in the community.

Prerequisites:

  • Leadership experience with volunteers or staff
  • Project management skills
  • Significant experience in a university residence or hotel environment
  • Bilingualism is an asset
  • Ability to obtain required security clearances and, if required, a drivers’ abstract

  • Strong leadership skills: mentorship, public speaking, building and managing relationships, motivating and facilitating collaboration
  • Excellent planning, administrative, and organization skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Appoint a second-in-charge to support your position
  • Determine composition of Village Committee, assist in recruiting and training committee members
  • Work collaboratively with the Niagara 2021 Staff  in the development and implementation of all policies and procedures and dimensions of the Village operational plans and related functions
  • Coordinate, and participate directly in the planning and delivery of the Village Plan and related functions
  • As an active member of the GSC, attend and contribute to meetings and liaise with other GSC Chairs, identifying and managing interdependencies between related FAs
  • Plan and facilitate monthly pre-Games and Games-time Village Venue Team meetings
  • Undertake tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the chair of the GSC
  • Demonstrate commitment and understanding of the Host Society vision, mission and work within the approved budget
  • Prepare a final report on the Athlete’s Village component of the 2021 Canada Games

Time Commitment and Availability:

From appointment through to completion of the Games (August 2021) including extended hours during Games Time (August 1-24, 2021): 

  • Participate in volunteer orientation and training sessions
  • Participate in the GSC monthly meetings as required
  • Lead/conduct monthly Village Venue Team meetings as required, provide ad-hoc guidance to Village Leads where needed
  • Liaise with other Functional Areas and committee chairs as required
  • Participate in other Functional Area related meetings as required
  • Participate in Functional Area presentations at National Sport Organization, Mission and Sponsor Conferences (five major conferences prior to the Games)
  • A willingness to work variable work hours including weekends and evenings
  • Be available for pre-Games sport test events
  • Prepare post- Games final report as per Canada Games Council format within one month of Games completion
